Irkutsk International Airport IKT / UIII

The single runway 12/30 (3,565 m, ILS CAT I both ends) is hemmed in by city housing and garages just off the extended centreline, the same constraint blamed for the 2006 S7 Flight 778 (Airbus A310) overrun that killed 125; Irkutsk is the principal air gateway to Lake Baikal, about 60 km away. A replacement airport, 'Irkutsk-Novy' on the 'Klyuchevaya' site between Irkutsk and Angarsk, was revived in 2025 after nearly a decade frozen: the site was agreed by Rosaviatsia, Rostec and the regional governor in February 2025, a pre-design contractor was engaged by September 2025, pre-design work is due to finish by March 2026, survey and design work is planned for 2026-2027, and construction is targeted for 2028-2030, for a 4,200 m runway (no aircraft-weight restriction) sized for up to 10 million passengers/year, possibly with jet bridges; the current single-runway airport remains the only one operating and has no confirmed closure date. Traffic hit a record 4,048,738 passengers in 2025 (up 2.7%), but the international terminal remains a tight 240 pax/hour, and a temporary modular arrivals annex opened June 2025 is under legal dispute after Russia's Supreme Court ruled in November 2025 that its 'temporary' status was unlawful.
