Scheduled commercial service collapsed with COVID-19 in 2020 (traffic fell from about 99,100 passengers in 2019 to 433 in 2021) and has only partly recovered since; 2022's 10,837 passengers is the latest full-year total in the airport's own published traffic series. A 2018 figure of 98,194 passengers belongs to this same airport, not to Réunion Roland-Garros/RUN, and sits consistently alongside the 2019 total, so it should not be discarded as misattributed. Fly Vetiv'Air, a newly formed carrier, announced on 19 December 2025 a Pierrefonds-Durban (King Shaka) route flown with aircraft from South African carrier Global Airways, three rotations a week at roughly EUR 650 return — the two names describe partners in one route, not a conflict. The planned 27 February 2026 launch was postponed to 1 May 2026 after an audit found gaps in infrastructure, operational coordination and procedures for A320 service. Separately, a firefighter staffing crisis (simultaneous sick leave among the airfield's eight SSLIA/rescue firefighters) halted all commercial passenger flights from 10 April 2026, with no resolution date found in reporting reviewed here. Whether the Durban service subsequently started, and its current operating status, could not be confirmed and should be checked directly with the airport, Fly Vetiv'Air, or the DGAC before planning around it. No ILS is published for runway 15/33 (PAPI both ends only), and customs/immigration for international movements should be arranged in advance (PPR) given the field's currently unsettled international schedule.
