Hopedale is the legislative capital of Nunatsiavut (the Inuit self-governing region of Labrador) and has no road connection to the rest of Newfoundland and Labrador, making this gravel airstrip a fly-in-only lifeline alongside the seasonal (mid-June to mid-November) MV Kamutik W ferry.
