Grise Fiord (Inuktitut: Aujuittuq, 'place that never thaws') is Canada's northernmost civilian community (2021 pop. 144), founded in 1953 when Inuit families were forcibly relocated here from Inukjuak, Quebec and Pond Inlet by the federal government/RCMP as human flagpoles asserting Arctic sovereignty - Ottawa formally apologized in 2010. This single gravel strip is the hamlet's only land link to the outside world, served by twice-weekly Canadian North scheduled Twin Otter/Dash flights via Resolute Bay (YRB) and by Kenn Borek Air charters supporting research, medevac and tourism into nearby Quttinirpaaq National Park on northern Ellesmere Island.
