Shut to all civil/commercial traffic since 24 February 2022 and sitting roughly 90 km from the Ukrainian border in a region that endured a roughly seven-month Ukrainian ground incursion (Aug 2024 to Mar 2025) with cross-border fighting continuing into 2026, it remains one of eight Russian airports (with Anapa, Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Lipetsk, Rostov-on-Don and Simferopol) still closed under the same wartime restrictions. Rosaviation's chief said in November 2025 that all eight are technically ready to reopen but that the decision rests with the Defence Ministry, which had not acted as of September 2026 -- likely the lowest-probability reopening in the set. The co-located Khalino airbase (14th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, part of 6th Guards Air and Air Defence Forces Army) remains an active military target, having taken a missile strike in November 2024 and a drone attack on regiment command in 2025. The regional operator says it is preserving the field's infrastructure while posting a loss of about 39 million rubles in 2025 (after a small profit in 2024), with reconstruction design work slated for 2026 and construction for 2027-2028 aiming for completion by 2029. No verified passenger figures exist for any year since the last pre-war year (2021), when RusLine and IrAero ran domestic services from Kursk.
