The EU's 16th sanctions package (24 Feb 2025) imposed a full transaction ban on Zhukovsky Airport as part of wider Russian-infrastructure measures, and Swiss SECO aligned its own list to match on 15 May 2025, also naming Zhukovsky alongside Vnukovo; neither text singles out a specific defense-cargo rationale, but both are a material flag for Western carriers, lessors and insurers considering any dealings here, and the airport sits inside the militarized Gromov LII flight-test complex. The airport shares its runway - a working length of 4,600 m out of a roughly 5.4 km physical strip, among the longest in Europe - with the Gromov Flight Research Institute test center and is best known as host of the biennial MAKS air show. 2024 traffic reached 1,491,000 passengers (the airport's own reported full-year figure), a fourth consecutive annual increase driven almost entirely by new domestic routes (frequency up roughly 2.8x, first year domestic traffic reached 25% of operations). 2025 traffic fell back to roughly 1,426,000 passengers (about -4.4%, confirmed by the airport's own CEO in May 2026 and by year-end financial disclosures published Sept 2026), even as revenue and net profit rose, reflecting a pullback in international rather than domestic operations. Most pre-2022 international connections beyond the CIS/EAEU remain suspended under Western airspace closures, and Rosaviatsia has repeatedly ordered short-notice operational halts across Moscow-area airports, Zhukovsky included, since the war began, so schedule volatility should be assumed rather than treated as exceptional; continued civil and military-test co-location with the Gromov LII complex remains a standing operational-risk item for trip planners.
