On 27 March 2024, Transport Canada and the Council of the Haida Nation renamed it from 'Sandspit Airport' to K'il Kun Xidgwangs Daanaay ('Sandspit flying place' in the Skidegate Haida dialect) - the first Indigenous-language renaming of a Transport Canada airport - though the CYZP/YZP codes, flight operations and the community name Sandspit are unchanged.
