The long ex-military paved runway (built 1942, later a Strategic Air Command base) also serves as a designated emergency divert strip for wide-body jets on polar routes, while the town itself is world-famous as the 'Polar Bear Capital' and sits on Treaty 5 land with a mixed Cree, Dene, Inuit and Metis population.
