Resolute Bay Airport serves Qausuittuq (Resolute), an Inuit hamlet on Cornwallis Island created in 1953-55 when Inuit families from Inukjuak and Pond Inlet were relocated here by the federal government as part of the controversial High Arctic exile program to assert Arctic sovereignty. The gravel strip has long been the logistics and refuelling hub for the High Arctic — supporting Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line construction in the 1950s, Natural Resources Canada's Polar Continental Shelf Program, and Kenn Borek Air Twin Otter charters serving Ellesmere Island research stations, Grise Fiord, and North Pole expedition support — while Canadian North provides the only scheduled service (ATR 42, via Arctic Bay from Iqaluit).
