Fort Chipewyan Airport is the year-round air lifeline for the fly-in hamlet of Fort Chipewyan — home to the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Mikisew Cree First Nation and Fort Chipewyan Métis — on Lake Athabasca at the edge of Wood Buffalo National Park, roughly 250 km downstream of the Athabasca oil sands; McMurray Aviation (to Fort McMurray) and Air Tindi (to Fort Smith, Yellowknife and Edmonton) provide the community's only scheduled service, as no permanent road reaches the community outside a seasonal winter road and summer river route.
