Chesterfield Inlet (Inuktitut: Igluligaarjuk) is the oldest continuously established community in Nunavut, founded around a 1911 Hudson's Bay Company trading post, and later home to the region's largest Catholic mission and, from 1950-1969, the Sir Joseph Bernier federal day school and Turquetil Hall residence — the first residential school in the eastern Arctic, a legacy survivors continue to seek recognition for. Today the gravel-strip airport is served by Calm Air (turboprop link to Rankin Inlet and the wider Kivalliq network) plus periodic charter traffic (e.g. Nolinor Aviation) supporting the Meadowbank/Agnico Eagle mining operations, and remains the community's only year-round transport link given its Hudson Bay coastal isolation.
