South Indian Lake is the main settlement of O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation, a Cree community forcibly relocated in 1974 when Manitoba Hydro's Churchill River Diversion flooded its original townsite; the community remains in litigation with Manitoba Hydro over decades of hydro-related harm. The gravel airstrip is served by Perimeter Aviation on scheduled routes linking Thompson and York Landing, and the community also has year-round gravel road access via PR 493 from Leaf Rapids, so it is not fly-in-only. The runway is currently too short for the province's Citation II air ambulance and is slated for extension under Manitoba's Northern Airports capital program.
