Closed to civil traffic since Ukraine's 24 Feb 2022 airspace shutdown at the start of Russia's full-scale invasion; the international terminal has been reported damaged by Russian strikes in the war's opening weeks, and Kharkiv Oblast borders Russia directly (city center roughly 40 km/25 mi from the border), leaving the airport exposed to repeated missile, glide-bomb and drone strikes with no confirmed reopening date as of Sept 2026. Ukrainian reconstruction discussion has centered on Boryspil and Lviv as reopening candidates; Kharkiv has not been named among them in accessible reporting.
