Airport contact
Opened 20 August 2019 as one of Russia's newest greenfield civil airports, certified for CAT II ILS approaches (25 November 2020) on its single 3,000m runway. Passenger traffic grew from 257,582 in 2019 to a peak of about 1.15 million in 2024, then eased to 1.064 million in 2025 (given figure); H1 2026 ran roughly 490,000, per operator/press figures, and the airport marked its 7th anniversary on 20 August 2026 still fully operational. The airport sits close to Engels-2, a strategic bomber base repeatedly struck by Ukrainian drones since December 2022, with attacks continuing through 2026 (including a mid-July 2026 strike near Engels and an August 2026 drone strike on the Saratov oil refinery). Rosaviatsia has repeatedly imposed short-notice 'temporary restrictions' on arrivals and departures at Gagarin airport itself (reported March and November 2025, pattern ongoing into 2026) without a full closure — Gagarin has not appeared on Russia's list of long-term-closed southern airports. As at all Russian airports, Western fuel majors, ground handlers, caterers and MRO providers exited after February 2022, and EU/UK/US airspace and most Western carriers remain closed to Russian aviation; current international destinations are limited to CIS/Turkey/Middle East-type routes (e.g. Yerevan, Batumi, Antalya, Hurghada).
