It is promoted as a safer alternative to Port-au-Prince amid gang-related disruptions there, but as a very recently internationalized field it remains operationally fragile: on March 20, 2026 an IBC Airways cargo flight overran the runway in rain and ended up against the perimeter fence on National Route 7 (no injuries, but substantial aircraft damage), and there is still no ILS/instrument approach.
